Day 2: Pura Track Speed Camp 2025
Tuesday, 21st January 2025
Our first full day in Tenerife began as a very wet one; nevertheless, we were all raring to go!
Training in the rain isn’t too bad when the weather is also warm.
The initial plan for the session had been technical acceleration work; however, I decided to swap it to a speed endurance day because of the rain. The weather was set to be clear skies later on, but because the local track team gets exclusive access on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, we stuck to our planned training time of 10 am.
I had planned slightly different running sessions for Nancy and Dee as they have different strengths and capabilities.
Dee had 2 sets of 250m, 200m, 150m.
Nancy had 2 sets of 90m, 80m, 70m, 60m.
We started the session by doing the first half of the drills at the top of the stand but finished the second half on the track.
After the drills, both ladies finally got to do their first runouts on the track.
“Can we do another runout?” They asked — the feeling of the track beneath their feet was moreish!
Both ladies completed the sessions that were planned for them, and for the most part, they were even able to exceed the target times set for them. Having two sets made the session more of a challenge (in a good way), and although it was tough, they were all smiles after.
Dee
Initially, Dee was still a little hesitant to push herself and began her first few runs a little bit too slow. However, as she progressed through the session she did well and hit her target times. In terms of her arm movement, Dee’s last run was her best run. However, it was clear a lot of work still needed to be done to help her open up her stride length and get her knees up a bit more.
Nancy
Nancy did her first set of runs in spikes, but because her foot was playing up a little bit, she did the second set in trainers. Nancy was able to hit her target times and finish every run. Something she had been struggling with up until this camp!
Nancy also did well with focusing on opening up her stride length and maintaining this to the end of her runs.
After the runs, the ladies had a little bit of a conditioning circuit, followed by some stretching.
By this point, it was around 1 pm, and hunger was striking! So the three of us went to CANTINA, the restaurant situated at the top of the stadium (although we had to walk out of the stadium and around to enter it)!
I used our scheduled free time (2 pm - 7 pm) to get my own gym session done. Then in the evening, Nancy and I had dinner at Zentral Center Hotel, followed by a nice evening stroll.
Dee and Fran did their own thing.
